Yoga Asana Classes

Yoga – is it just gymnastics with incense?

No definitely not! Yoga is a wholistic and ancient system aimed at achieving physical , mental and inner harmony. Classes are non-competitive allowing less experienced students the latitude to stay within their capacity whilst encouraging stronger practitioners to explore theirs. Redlands Yoga and Mediation (RYAM) offers yoga classes which include a wonderful balance of asanas (exercises), Pranayama (breathing techniques), relaxation and meditation.

The Physical Benefits

Yoga asanas, do so much more than most other forms of exercise, not only do they increase flexibility, stretch away tightness and tension and strengthen and tone your muscles, but they also balance hormones, increase digestion and flush all the internal systems in the body, cleansing and detoxifying them.

In every class we’ll also take some time out for one of the most important things we can do for our body, relaxation. This is something we often don’t take seriously but is essential to allow the body to revitalise, regenerate re-energise and restore.

The Mental Benefits

Pranayama (breathing techniques) will increase the health and wellbeing of the body and along with meditation techniques will improve focus and help calm and quieten the active, often overstimulated mind.

Experience the deeply restorative power of yoga relaxation and meditation. These age-old techniques aid an individual in achieving blissful rest, rejuvenation and a sense of overall well being.

Our classes are fully guided  and offer practical methods  to add to your lifestyle. These ancient practices help overcome stress and anxieties, relieve tension and calm the mind.

We practice Kirtan Meditation which is one of the oldest meditation practice from the east and at the same time, is the fastest growing meditation practice in the west.

It is a very simple and guided group meditation process, where you focus your mind and your heart in hearing and singing of the wonderful mantras (sacred yoga sound vibrations). The mantras are lead and guided by the instructor, accompanied with relaxing live music.

You will experience, as the heading says “deep peace” and inner joy during and after the class. And this is just the beginning!

What to expect : You can laydown, sit on a cushion or a chair. Everything is fully guided. Wear whatever you will feel comfortable in and something to keep you warm during the cooler seasons.

What to bring:  Please bring one or two small cushions  and a yoga mat if you have one.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR

John Balaam

John Balaam

Hi , I began my yoga and meditation practice close to 40 yrs ago .

Yoga and meditation have been a real gift to me as they are a real gift to humanity . You don’t even have to be proficient at these practices to feel immediate benefits .The aim of the different yoga processes is to ultimately help an individual achieve complete harmony. The different systems of yoga have techniques and practices ranging from physical postures (asanas), to the deepest stages of meditation, all aimed toward helping a person achieve optimum physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

I hope you will take up my invite to join me one day .

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

I’m not very bendy I can’t even touch my toes! Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

Please let me answer this in a round about way.

The most important principle in yoga practice is to enjoy it and key to this is to pick the intensity you want to perform at (and find a class where you have the latitude to do this). If after every session you feel energised, clear headed and refreshed then you have achieved a form of mastery in yoga.

Naturally, if you feel like this you will want to feel like this again so you will visit your yoga mat more frequently. As you practice like this eventually all the ‘maidens of the Hatha yoga system’ ie. flexibility, strength, artistry and proficiency will come of their own accord BUT your first priority must be to savour and enjoy what you are doing ( so don’t over do it and don’t under do it, do it just right ie The Goldiloks Priciple !! ).

Is yoga religious? I am not really interested in spirituality.

No yoga is not a religion; it’s a practice and can lead to a lifestyle. There are principles in the yoga teachings, but individuals can choose to learn about these teachings as they see fit.
